How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?

acting without conscience

How would you define masculinity?

the same as feminimity – an ideology of desire.

Does misandry exist?

Sure, any concept ‘exists’. Context matters more.

Only in a way that has advantaged me

What best describes you?

Surly cakeboy

Respondent 929

Does patriarchy exist?

Yes

How would you define patriarchy?

A systemic bias towards men.

How has patriarchy hurt you?

I don’t think it has hurt me specifically as much as damaged the society I’m a part of. It’s certainly hurt people I care about.

How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?

I think, like most men, I’ve been guilty of not questioning things. I guess I’ve passively been a part of it, and that’s not enormously better than actively being a part of it.

How would you define masculinity?

I’m not sure. The traditional idea of it is a bit contradictory – stoic yet aggressive.

Does misandry exist?

No

Perhaps it does on an individual basis, not a societal one though.

Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?

No

What best describes you?

A feminist

Respondent 923

Does patriarchy exist?

Yes

How would you define patriarchy?

Male privilege, inequality biased towards men especially in power, control, decision making, authority

How has patriarchy hurt you?

It makes it harder to be myself

How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?

Every time I take advantage of the privileges it gives me

How would you define masculinity?

Not something I take much notice of. Any real meaning is now lost in stereotypes and cultural expectations

Does misandry exist?

Yes

In isolated cases, not a wide societal issue

Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?

Only in a way that has advantaged me

What best describes you?

A feminist

Respondent 921

Does patriarchy exist?

Yes

How would you define patriarchy?

male hegemony – a conscious unconscious

How has patriarchy hurt you?

By defining a set of expectations that, though unspoken, expect certain attitudes towards violence, pain, and independence, that quite frankly I am unable to meet. Moreover – this is a position from which it is contemptible to complain, couched as it is in privilege

How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?

Probably through dismissing and diminishing others through humour, and resentment – a feeling of threat to my own position (and my expectation of my position).

How would you define masculinity?

badly

Does misandry exist?

I don’t know what misandry is!

For Christ sake – why do we always assume the world is binary. Misogyny is cause by a set of expectations that are woven into the fabric of society – to attempt to deconstruct that does not automatically assume a hatred, or a prejudice. This is the rage of the realignment of a society – yes there is pain, but that doesn’t presuppose a conscious attack.

Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?

Only in a way that has advantaged me

What best describes you?

A feminist

Respondent 943

Does patriarchy exist?

Yes

How would you define patriarchy?

The assumption that gender roles are innate, and the social norms, structures and power dynamics based on this assumption. Patriarchy is the male side of this, but it’s something perpetuated by many of both sexes.

How has patriarchy hurt you?

The assumption that I have a certain nature means that it was taken as for-granted, and so I was conditioned along those lines. I also get flack for choosing to mix gender roles, by acting in feminine manners, both in my behaviours and attire.

How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?

Conditioning against and lack of opportunity in expressing ‘feminine’ emotions causing communication issues, not realising how biased my perception had been, not realising how harmful the male gaze is. (I have hurt myself by hurting others).

How would you define masculinity?

I honestly couldn’t say, other than the other text I’ve entered in this form.

Does misandry exist?

Yes

Cos, fuck, males can be right dicks. See the male gaze, mansplaining, existing social inequalities, etc. We are assumed not to be safe, so some people avoid us, which is hurtful but a statistically valid form of reaction. I don’t know the right phrase for that, i.e., experientially (not existentially).

Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?

Yes

I have been beaten up and disowned by my family for wearing skirts. I have been excluded from ‘girly’ activities.

What best describes you?

A feminist

Existentialist, humanist, gq/tg.

Respondent 913

Does patriarchy exist?

Yes

How would you define patriarchy?

System in which, be it within a society or an institution, social, political or otherwise, principally men are in positions of power and benefiting from privileges given by those positions of power. And where women, even when in similar positions, do not reap the same benefits and are otherwise generally excluded by design, tradition, or by subconscious social norms from attaining positions which would upset the male dominated system of power. This system also filters down to more everyday notions of society and how men and women regard each other, with the former subconsciously or otherwise encouraged to believe that the latter is lesser.

How has patriarchy hurt you?

it has robbed me of many potentially life changing contributions from women in many industries and sectors that have been sidelined in favour of their male counterparts for no justifiable or quantifiable reason. It also sets a bad example for equality and integration in other areas, all based on illogical outdated and unfair ideas of “tradition”

How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?

The effect of living as a man under the patriarchy makes it almost impossible to answer that question. Because the patriarchy places me in a position where I am both unaware of its invisible workings in my favour, as well as painfully aware of how few women are present in so many walks of life that are not stigmatised as being “female centric”, as well as being oblivious to my direct participation in it as an average man not in any physical position of power. I suppose being a black man living in a White European society might mitigate the strength of the effect I have towards the exclusion of women somewhat

How would you define masculinity?

John Wayne? But on a more serious note, the idea of masculinity and femininity are falsehoods (also empowered by the patriarchy) that put people in neatly labeled boxes which encourages exclusion. The same characteristics that define a man (other than the obvious) could well describe any woman, and vice versa.

Does misandry exist?

Yes

It exists the same way prejudice of all forms exists

Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?

No

What best describes you?

How would you define masculinity?

Conventional def: the expression in style, bearing, and commitments of idealized notions of what men are supposed to be. Better def is the plural, masculinities: the various confections of style, bearing, and commitments that are ascribed to men and others who are viewed as manly or mannish.

How has patriarchy hurt you?

I think traditional patriarchy negatively effects us all and restricts our expression of ourselves due to gender roles that restrict us

How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?

I think like most people I’m guilty of some casual sexism or treating people differently because of gender, although I try to avoid this and if challenged would address it

Being a man and being secure and confident in yourself, not how people expect you to act
