About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Part true storytelling, part TED talk and part apology, the show looks at how the patriarchy hurts men too; how the patriarchy has hurt him, and how he has hurt people because of patriarchy. Drawing on an anonymous survey of 1000 men, feminist theory, internet memes and his life experience, Dave will explain the conclusions he Read More ...
Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
Patriarchy is a social system in which males(notably cisgendered males) hold power and hold authority over women as an unjust benefit of their gender status. Normally this is a result of historical economic or social power relations that no longer(or by our current ethical leanings), should no longer exist.
How has patriarchy hurt you?
As a male victim of domestic abuse it both hindered my seeing this for what it was, seeking help, and how I was seen by others when I revealed this.
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
It is hard to say as I feel I must be aware that all my actions should be seen through a prism of the patriarchy they were conducted in, and I likely was not aware of how those actions were being influenced. But I’m certain that as someone who is perceived to be a classic example of the type of male patriarchy pushes to the top, my opinions and choices have often been given presidence over those of equal merit from women.
How would you define masculinity?
like femininity, it’s a genre, a genre of gender. Like all genres it is defined by what we *choose* to put in it, and when that particular moment of definition is no longer useful or desirable, we should discard it.
Does misandry exist?
as an individual’s outlook on men, rather than an ingrained social condition.
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
What best describes you?
None of the above
suspicious of grand narratives and movements, I just try not to be a tosser.
