About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Part true storytelling, part TED talk and part apology, the show looks at how the patriarchy hurts men too; how the patriarchy has hurt him, and how he has hurt people because of patriarchy. Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
Men control everything
How has patriarchy hurt you?
It hasn’t. I’m a straight white male so I’m basically golden.
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
I haven’t to my knowledge, but just the fact that I can go to a bar without someone dickhead feeling me up and I can wear shorts without someone shouting shit at of his car at me (aside from complimenting me on my sweet jean shorts), means just being existing I’m probably doing something wrong.
How would you define masculinity?
Keeping things inside until it bubbles over and you top yourself. Being a man is not bacon, having a beard or any of that other bullshit Ron Swanson dross people bang on about.
Does misandry exist?
Yeah it does exist, there’s not question of that, but it’s often well deserved.
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
Only in a way that has advantaged me
What best describes you?
None of the above
An ally to feminism sounds like something a very lame person would say. I’d say feminist but I’m not one of those idiots who wears a ‘this is what a feminist looks like’ t-shirts. Basically, I think I know the drill but labelling yourself is tedious
