Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
The sometimes deliberate, sometimes unthinking privileging of men* and maleness in society. (*I’m aware that not all men have penises and that not all men benefit at all times from the patriarchy)
How has patriarchy hurt you?
By making me feel, particularly while I was growing up, that there was something wrong with me because I didn’t conform to gender stereotype.
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
I have not challenged my access to male privilege when it has been available. Which is to say, I have thrown people under the bus.
How would you define masculinity?
A set of traits traditionally associated with the male gender including roughness, confidence, power, aggression, decisiveness, tallness etc. It is a construct perpetuated by the fact that anybody (of any gender) who exhibits some or all of those traits is described as being ‘masculine’.
