About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Part true storytelling, part TED talk and part apology, the show looks at how the patriarchy hurts men too; how the patriarchy has hurt him, and how he has hurt people because of patriarchy. Drawing on an anonymous survey of 1000 men, feminist theory, internet memes and his life experience, Dave will explain the conclusions he Read More ...
Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
I don’t know, not really sure I can do that in this little box. But I suppose ‘White males in charge’ might sum it up. Although personally ‘patriarchy’ is only a symptom of capitalism and if you want to solve a problem you need to address the cause.
How has patriarchy hurt you?
Defining gender roles
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
Never really thought about it too much. Suppose by being to judgemental, but I am pretty sure we are all guilty of that.
How would you define masculinity?
I wouldn’t. I don’t agree with the concept or any concept of gender. They are outdated views that need to be put behind us.No ones behaviour or personality should be in any way defined by what is or isn’t between their legs.
Does misandry exist?
To deny that people hate men for whatever reasons is foolish and naive. For all humanities capicite for love it has an equal capacity for hate, for any reason under the sun including being male. That is not a political statement, just a statement of fact.
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
I sincerily dbout anyone in this world has ever experienced prejudice in a way that ONLY advantaged them. If they think so I think they have a misunderstand of what prejudice is. That is not to say prejudice affects everyone equally. Far from it. But inequality in society does affect everyone even if it is only that it affect society as a whole.
What best describes you?
Not a huge fan of labels. I used to not like the word feminist, sounds far too sectarian. And unfortunately to many people on both sides of the movement it still is. But hey, I do not believe in gender so if you want to put a label on that feminist is as good as any. P.S Make the goddamn boxes bigger. I am fairly sure most comments will be much bigger than mine.
