About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
Patriarchy is one part of a hierarchy of control that exists throughout society and reinforces and promotes the idea that men must be strong and dominate women.
How has patriarchy hurt you?
It has encouraged me to have a negative attitude towards myself when I have not lived up to the narrow standards of masculinity that patriarchy enforces.
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
I have treated women and vulnerable minorities in a way that is unfair and prejudiced. I still retain attitudes that have been drummed into me by patriarchy but I fight them whenever I am aware of them.
How would you define masculinity?
I wouldn’t bother to. It’s a concept that’s used far too often to convince men to be things they aren’t and to treat others in negative ways.
Does misandry exist?
It’s not a big deal and too often used as an excuse to dismiss other people’s calls for gender equality.
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
As a man, I can’t really complain about the minor prejudice I have experienced.
What best describes you?
None of the above
All these descriptions are positive, but too many people argue about what they mean. I just want equality and a level playing field for all.
