About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
A system where power is held by those with perceived male identities and characteristics, at the expense of others.
How has patriarchy hurt you?
By restricting my freedom to define myself as a man outside of those perceived male qualities without suffering disadvantage. By seeing peers suffer similarly, often resulting in poor mental health and in extreme cases suicide.
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
Passively, by benefiting from a position of privilege I have disadvantaged others. Actively, when younger I often openly used gender stereotypes to belittle women without realising it.
How would you define masculinity?
I would rather not, other than to say it is perceived as being a more active, agressive behaviour than femininity, and that I think that idea is harmful.
Does misandry exist?
I would imagine within closed systems where power is restricted from men systematically this could and probably does exist. As a general societal problem it does not signify.
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
What best describes you?
An ally to feminism
