About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
Preferential treatment of heterosexual men in and by society.
How has patriarchy hurt you?
As a gay man, I am viewed as less than a straight man. This ranges from informal homophobia (name calling etc) to institutionalised homophobia (inability to marry). This is due to being regarded as feminine by the patriarchy, as I have sex with men. As to be a woman is less than a straight man, so it is to be gay under a patriarchal view.
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
I do have a prejudice against the judgement and capability of women, due to early life influences presenting men as superior. I actively fight against it in my daily thoughts. I may discriminate against women because of it- I do not recall a specific incident, but it is possible.
How would you define masculinity?
I can only define it in the physical sense, of being in an identifiably male/manly body.
Does misandry exist?
It is nowhere near as dangerous as misogyny, and should not be treated as such.
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
See 3 above.
