About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Part true storytelling, part TED talk and part apology, the show looks at how the patriarchy hurts men too; how the patriarchy has hurt him, and how he has hurt people because of patriarchy. Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
The way this world is built for and by men. The way everything is centred around men and and everything else is seen as “the other”. For example how feminism exists but “masculism” has yet to take off because there’s no need for it. Or how most anti-homosexuality laws around the world criminalise gay men rather than lesbians as the laws are against the act of sodomy.
How has patriarchy hurt you?
It contributes towards homophobic behaviour. For example if a girl gets drunk and kisses another girl then it’s hot and fun in the eyes of the patriarchy. If I get drunk and kiss another guy in a non-gay setting, then I stand a fair chance at being ostracised as a result
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
Probably loads of ways that I haven’t noticed
How would you define masculinity?
Does misandry exist?
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
Only as a result of being gay, not as a result of being a man
What best describes you?
