About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Part true storytelling, part TED talk and part apology, the show looks at how the patriarchy hurts men too; how the patriarchy has hurt him, and how he has hurt people because of patriarchy. Drawing on an anonymous survey of 1000 men, feminist theory, internet memes and his life experience, Dave will explain the conclusions he Read More ...
Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
A system where Men rule a society with a superiority to women and women are denied the same rights as men purely due to their gender
How has patriarchy hurt you?
It hasn’t, because it doesn’t exist.
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
I haven’t, because it doesn’t exist.
How would you define masculinity?
I think it’s very difficult to define, but if you asked 100 people whether someone was masculine then 90 would give you the same answer. They are inherent traits that are typical of men and what an ideal man is expected to be. Strength of character and body, resilience to criticism, being able to protect and provide etc. are all examples.
Does misandry exist?
Of course misandry exists, but it isn’t that common.
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
I have had my points and arguements rubbished simply because I am male
What best describes you?
None of the above
I do not believe in equality of the sexes due to the differences between them. To strive for equality among two genders that will never be equal is madness. Equal rights where possible should be encouraged, but gender differences should be recognised and accounted for.
