About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Drawing on an anonymous survey of 1000 men, feminist theory, internet memes and his life experience, Dave will explain the conclusions he Read More ...
Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
The systematic promotion of so-called ‘masculine’ values and denigration of values labelled ‘feminine’, as well a socio-economic structure in which (holding other variables constant) men have greater power and freedom than women.
How has patriarchy hurt you?
It has encouraged me to pursue and internalise masculine values which are at times inimical to my preferred way of being.
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
I have on occasion assumed that men should have more influence than women in certain spheres of life, or I may have given less weight to what some women have to say.
How would you define masculinity?
Masculinity is defined only within a particular culture or social group. It is to a large extent (maybe entirely) arbitrary. I don’t have a personal definition but my culture defines it as a set of traits, including assertiveness, physical strength, rationality, lack of emotion, stoicism, etc.
Does misandry exist?
Whilst it’s probable that genuine misandry does exist, it is not a problem to the same extent as misogyny and specific claims of misandry are often exaggerated.
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
I often behave in a way very atypical of my perceived biological gender, which has on some occasions drawn moderately negative responses. On other occasions, I have benefited from male privilege.
