Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
A system of leadership engrained in society that favors men and society’s perception of what is masculine.
How has patriarchy hurt you?
It’s hurt my wife, my mother, my sisters, my friends, and so it has hurt me. Seeing women hurt hurts me. It’s forced me into gender roles I don’t like nor am I particularly qualified for. It’s caused me to hurt others, which hurts me. It’s limited qualified women in the fields that I work in and so it has limited me.
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
As a teen I used and hurt a lot of girls sexually and emotionally to try and fill insecurities about my own masculinity that were driven by a partiarchal society. In high school and college I looked down on women who didn’t fit into the gender roles that I believed they should.
How would you define masculinity?
The act of being a male.
Does misandry exist?
Literally anyone can be hated or discriminated against because of who they are, including men. However, in our particular society it is not even close to being as prominent as misogyny.
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
Only in a way that has advantaged me
On some level I perhaps have been discriminated against in workplaces since I prefer to work in roles associated with women, namely childcare. I’m inclined to say that it has only advantaged me though because at least I can always find another job in practically any field I want.
What best describes you?
An ally to feminism
