About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Part true storytelling, part TED talk and part apology, the show looks at how the patriarchy hurts men too; how the patriarchy has hurt him, and how he has hurt people because of patriarchy. Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
A false model of societal behavior based off of a superficial understanding of a symptom rather than a deeper understanding of the cause.
How has patriarchy hurt you?
The patriarchy makes me feel less valuable due to the fact that my talents are not those traditionally ascribed to my gender. Except it doesn’t because I’m a rational being who is capable of determining the value of my talents.
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
I have often belittled men and women for failing to adhere to standards that may be considered creations of the patriarchy. Then I belittled them for caring about other people’s standards rather than forming their own.
How would you define masculinity?
Through physical characteristics common to all males.
Does misandry exist?
I don’t think that misandry is generally a matter of gender so much as perceived utility.
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
I’m male, so you probably don’t believe me. The industry I seek to work in is almost entirely female and the hiring is done almost entirely by females, who continue to hire almost entirely females.
What best describes you?
None of the above
I am a rationalist. Run some experiments and get back to me with regards to which of the worldviews you included actually bears out.
