About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Part true storytelling, part TED talk and part apology, the show looks at how the patriarchy hurts men too; how the patriarchy has hurt him, and how he has hurt people because of patriarchy. Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
Social and political system where white men are the normal state of being human, other people abnormal in some way and usually deficient because of it.
How has patriarchy hurt you?
Spend a lot of time supporting valued colleagues who need to jump hoops I don’t have to. Dealing with men who want me to support them to detriment of friends and colleagues out of male solidarity. Not being able to be friendly or helpful to people I don’t know because they are (rightly!) suspicious of strange men.
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
Definitely and mostly because it’s particularly hard to be a male teenager and not know how much power you have until it goes wrong. Once you realise it, it’s pretty obvious though.
How would you define masculinity?
Masculinity is a natural social identity influenced by having a male body PLUS the politics, power and history that goes with it
Does misandry exist?
I guess if someone said they were a misandrist I’d not question their judgement
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
people assuming I am head of the household when I’m not… jobs where managers have ignored me because they’re too busy flirting or even harassing colleagues (this is frequent)
What best describes you?
I don’t know if men can be feminists but I hope I’m a nice guy (:
