About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Part true storytelling, part TED talk and part apology, the show looks at how the patriarchy hurts men too; how the patriarchy has hurt him, and how he has hurt people because of patriarchy. Drawing on an anonymous survey of 1000 men, feminist theory, internet memes and his life experience, Dave will explain the conclusions he Read More ...
Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
The patriarchy exists as like an overarching ‘traditional man stuff is good’ consensus between everyone in any position of power. Men should be men, and be in charge, and women should be women, and not. It’s pretty wank
How has patriarchy hurt you?
Only in so much as eschewing traditional male roles, it by being big and strong and not enjoying ‘girly’ things is strongly criticised. Certainly there’s always been somewhat of an onus on me to be less like me, I’ve been mocked for being very skinny and for enjoying certain things
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
Definitely when I was younger I bought into that view of masculinity somewhat, I’ve definitely used femininity as an insult before now, and that is a sucks thing to do and I’m sorry for it now
How would you define masculinity?
Traditional masculinity is being big and strong, and not being allowed to have any emotions. It’s ridiculing anything that falls into the boundaries of ‘something a WOMAN might like, God forbid’. Masculinity is toxic.
Does misandry exist?
only in really isolated pockets, some people genuinely do hate and despise men to an unreasonable degree, but in almost all cases misandry is a joke
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
I can’t think of any examples but I almost certainly have in the course of my life
What best describes you?
An ally to feminism
