About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Part true storytelling, part TED talk and part apology, the show looks at how the patriarchy hurts men too; how the patriarchy has hurt him, and how he has hurt people because of patriarchy. Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
The structure of society which structures gender relations in specific ways by defining genders in terms of strict boundaries, and outlining interactions between people of different and the same gender. In doing so it interacts with other organising principles of society such as heteronormativity, race, class, etc to create hierarchies of outcomes and specific expectations of men and women. In the vast majority of interactions it favours heterosexual white well off men
How has patriarchy hurt you?
I don’t fit the gender stereotypes. I’m shy and passive where I’m supposed to be confident and forward. I find it difficult to share feelings with male friends
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
I feel I can be quite entitled, especially with girlfriend and partners
How would you define masculinity?
The expected behaviours, outlooks and ways of being a man structured by society. It could interact with other social forces to create sub-masculinities e.g. working class masculinity might differ from aristocratic masculinity. We live in patriarchal societies, so masculinity in general follows and reinforces patriarchal norms
Does misandry exist?
I believe sometimes discussions of privilege, while correct in terms of identifying that some petiole are advantaged by current structures, forget that everyone’s life is difficult
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
Only in a way that has advantaged me
What best describes you?
None of the above
