About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
Male-oriented society. I actually don’t like the word as I feel it has connotations beyond what people mean when they use it. I would prefer to just say “male-oriented society” or similar as I think that’s clearer and less open to misinterpretation
How has patriarchy hurt you?
Personally, probably not much if at all but it hurts everyone by stopping women being able to live up to their full potential and as a result society as a whole is behind where it could be
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
Not intentionally or to my knowledge but probably I have been given opportunities or “benefit of the doubt” that would not have been given to a woman or girl
How would you define masculinity?
I don’t think anything is really definitively masculine or feminine at root. My concepts of being a man are the same as my concepts for being an adult in general. Rationality and empathy are the two main characteristics I would look for in a mature adult. Also ideally (reasonably) physically fit for e.g. Being able to help in an emergency situation but I guess that comes about if you have the first two characteristics – it’s a logical thing to do. I am rambling but essentially I think once you get past the stereotypes of what is expected of each gender we are more similar than we are different and we shouldn’t get hung up on the differences but make sure each individual lives up to their full potential in whatever way they can
