About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Part true storytelling, part TED talk and part apology, the show looks at how the patriarchy hurts men too; how the patriarchy has hurt him, and how he has hurt people because of patriarchy. Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
The ideological system that (along with capitalism, white supremacy and v closely with heteronormativity) oppresses and controls along gender lines
How has patriarchy hurt you?
Seriously fucked up my sexual interests, some body issues and inadequecy – obviously nothing compared to how it hurts all women
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
Pretty much every single interaction I had with a woman until I turned 19, and some after that. So much internalised awful shit that I will always be trying to unlearn.
How would you define masculinity?
The qualities that are traditionally associated with male-ness within a belief system that sees gender as binary. I’m really bored of supposedly progressive bros clinging like fuck to Beards and Meat.
Does misandry exist?
Anti male prejudice + power would be required on a large scale and this has never happened and can’t possibly happen under current white supremacist capitalist heteronormative patriarchy
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
Only in a way that has advantaged me
People assume I’m a lot more intelligent and knowledgable than I actually am because I’m a white seemingly-straight guy who likes some nerdy stuff
What best describes you?
An ally to feminism
Time was I would have said a feminist but I’ve learned that, as with everything, men should let women have that and just try to help educate men and also just listen and get out of the way
