About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
Societal expectations that value masculinity and men over femininity and women (and non-men) that manifest into individual prejudice as well as systemic injustice
How has patriarchy hurt you?
For a long time, it made it very difficult for me to engage in anything remotely considered feminine. I closed myself off from a side of myself that I love and it resulted in me being emotionally stunted and lacking in empathy
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
I was patronizing in a lot of ways to the women in my life. I often viewed women as sexual objects first and people second, and that manifested in ways such as not understanding boundaries and being unsupportive for things that did not affect me as a man. I still catch myself with these thoughts at times, and it’s a constant battle to correct these internalized prejudices.
How would you define masculinity?
Honestly? I have a very difficult time coming up with positive adjectives associated solely with masculinity that can’t also be applied to femininity. When I think of the kind of man I would like to be, I use the words kind, passionate, supportive, and understanding.
Does misandry exist?
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
Only in a way that has advantaged me
What best describes you?
An ally to feminism
