About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
Rule by fathers (and its propagation via sons who become fathers and the cult of father as evidenced through paternalism in various forms)
How has patriarchy hurt you?
It’s attempted to reify me and both genders into prescribed roles and in abject subjection to patriarchy’s ways of conceiving being and performing selfhood rather than allowing me the space to do what I want or to be who I want to be. It has convinced me and others that father=good and male=best while punishing all transgressions against those codes.
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
Through anger, through ignorance, and in reproducing the forms of control and force that patriarchy sustains itself through and that patriarchy reproduces through its practices and methodologies/ideologies.
How would you define masculinity?
Masculinity is a nebulous cloud that should mean whatever individual masculine presenting persons choose it to mean. Patriarchy defines it in the constellation of ways you see in mainstream culture.
Does misandry exist?
But it’s a nuisance compared to misogyny and the rabid violence perpetuated against women. Men get it easy and may experience “inconvenience”–but they equate inconvenience to violence, hatred, and systemic discrimination
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
Only in a way that has advantaged me
What best describes you?
