About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Part true storytelling, part TED talk and part apology, the show looks at how the patriarchy hurts men too; how the patriarchy has hurt him, and how he has hurt people because of patriarchy. Drawing on an anonymous survey of 1000 men, feminist theory, internet memes and his life experience, Dave will explain the conclusions he Read More ...
Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
A system where the leaders are all masculine-coded. I wouldn’t consider sexist systems of oppression essential to a patriarchy, but I wouldn’t see a culture remaining with a dominant gender without sexism.
How has patriarchy hurt you?
Viewing woman as inferior causes homophobia(? Or somehow the Greeks did not have it this way) and homophobia has caused me to lose friends and be uncomfortable about being homosexual and be secretive to my family and hurt our relationship.
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
No because I don’t think I hurt people very often and when I do I’d hurt them the same if they were the opposite gender or something. Oh I have insulted people for acting gay when I was younger but I don’t know if it hurt them.
How would you define masculinity?
Being strong so you can hunt and protect, getting what you want, being emotionally stoic.
Does misandry exist?
It’s so easy to concieve of. You can’t be abolute and at best you can only say it’s likely it doesn’t exist. I don’t think misandry is a pressing issue in a massively patriarchal culture but there may be subsets like households and classrooms where it does exist.
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
Maybe not prejudice against men but prejudice against women for not being masculine or prejudice against homosexuals. But I can’t rule out that people have judged me for being a man.
What best describes you?
An ally to feminism
