About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
A social system dominated by men, which permeates all aspects of society from small communities through to government. But I don’t accept that patriarchy exists – whilst some men hold power, most men have none.
How has patriarchy hurt you?
As a man it hasn’t explicitly. But patriarchy is a self-serving, sub-optimal way of running a society, thus in many respects the hurt it has inflicted upon me (and everybody) is immeasurable. The problems it causes the women in my life does hurt me indirectly.
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
Im not aware of having inflicted hurt on anybody as part of patriarchy – though I have no power bestowed upon me by patriarchy to cause hurt. Though I accept the possibility of inflicting hurt unintentionally. Perhaps via the subconscious use of our language which exhibits a gender bias.
How would you define masculinity?
A set of behaviours or characteristics most often attributed to men, but not exclusive to men.
Does misandry exist?
I’ve read the opinions of many feminists who believe men are the enemy.
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
What best describes you?
An ally to feminism
