About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
positions of power and institutionalised bias toward male-centred organisation
How has patriarchy hurt you?
Gave me unrealistic expectation of what being a male involves. Made me feel somehow less because I am not heterosexual, and being gay is akin to being feminine, which is less than a man. Also, the fact that I am not a very muscly person has led to the assumption that I am weak in all ways.
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
Once held sexist beliefs – thankfully mostly don’t now
How would you define masculinity?
I don’t think masculinity means anything, but i think others view masculinity as strong (physically), virile, confident and emotionless.
Does misandry exist?
It does, but it’s reactive to sexism and institutional misandry does not exist.
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
The assumption because I am male I should perform acts of physical labour, shouldn’t show emotion and should want to fuck women.
What best describes you?
An ally to feminism
