About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Part true storytelling, part TED talk and part apology, the show looks at how the patriarchy hurts men too; how the patriarchy has hurt him, and how he has hurt people because of patriarchy. Drawing on an anonymous survey of 1000 men, feminist theory, internet memes and his life experience, Dave will explain the conclusions he Read More ...
Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
How has patriarchy hurt you?
1. exacerbates body dysmorphia/eating disorders 2. Keeps assigning me male mentors even though I learn better from females/don’t do well with male authority figures (note: actually, hard to say patriarchy does this since male/female superiors tend to sort themselves this way, but a higher density of female bosses, professors, etc, would alleviate this.
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
Well, when I break up with girls they usually interpret something I say re commitment or freedom as “wanting to have sex with other ladies” which is really often not the case, but that impression of dudes probably comes from decades/centuries of dudes always having sex with other ladies all the time. Also I domineer conversations but I mostly do that to other men because talking to girls is scary!
How would you define masculinity?
It mostly involves death & self harm. For a cause or for its own sake. Radical pursuit of glory. Solitude, strength, seriousness, and self reliance etc are not separate or distinct concepts from this imo.
Does misandry exist?
I’m a damn misandrist! it’s honestly more ameliorable to extremely masculine dudes than feminism! misandry is not far at all removed from egoism/narcissism/self destructive pursuit of glory type stuff!
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
sometimes disadvantage, ie the female mentors thing, sometimes advantage but that’s mostly assumed since its hard to pick out times you got by unfairly just as a thing of human nature
What best describes you?
None of the above
ironic piece of shit nihilist
