About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Part true storytelling, part TED talk and part apology, the show looks at how the patriarchy hurts men too; how the patriarchy has hurt him, and how he has hurt people because of patriarchy. Drawing on an anonymous survey of 1000 men, feminist theory, internet memes and his life experience, Dave will explain the conclusions he Read More ...
Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
Society’s bias towards cisgendered men. Evident in pay disparity through to the way women and men are portrayed by the media etc…
How has patriarchy hurt you?
False ideals of what is expected of a man. And it affects the women I love in life and in my family. It’s hard seeing everyone buy my 3 year old niece all the pink plastic kitchen stuff for christmas.
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
I stop short of calling myself a feminist to avoid the debate as to if a man can be one. I don’t necessarily think I’ve earned the right to call myself one. I certainly consider myself an ally to the movement. But growing up as a ignorant teenager and early twenty something I’ve done my fair share of assumptions, stupid comments, bodyshaming. I may be a part of the solution now but I’m not perfect and I couldn’t consider myself a poster boy for feminism. I’m working on improving. The older I get (I’m in my thirties) the more the ignorant misogynistic habits seem abhorrent to me and I’m making progress (albeit sometimes slow) on improving or removing them in myself and others.
How would you define masculinity?
I honestly don’t know. You have a clear physiological difference in size and strength to women as a man. I would say part of being a man is using this strength to be a better person and to never to intimidate, bully or harm those who aren’t as strong as you. That sound so cheesy. I don’t know how to define it beyond physiology because society’s image of masculinity is so fucked up.
Does misandry exist?
If it does I haven’t seen it.
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
Only in a way that has advantaged me
What best describes you?
An ally to feminism
