Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
A system in which men have material and cultural control of the mechanisms of power.
How has patriarchy hurt you?
For much of my life I’ve hated myself and hurt others in pursuit of a cultural ideal, which I now recognize as “toxic masculinity.”
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
I’ve ostracized other men, and I’ve made women uncomfortable and afraid with my advances. All of which I regret now, very deeply.
How would you define masculinity?
Part of a system of opposites, standing diametrically from femininity like yin and yang. Currently bound up in toxic absolutes, but I see no reason why masculine traits can’t be whittled down to the positive and taken on by anyone, someday.
Does misandry exist?
The idea of “hating men” exists, and we can call it misandry if we must. But it isn’t part of a system like misogyny is, and very often it’s a symptom of the patriarchal system anyway.
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
I’ve never had to feel afraid on account of being a man. Sometimes unwelcome, but in general I understand why.
