Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
A cultural, social and political system that privileges and centres the traditionally masculine.
How has patriarchy hurt you?
I have been the target of bullying for not adhering to stereotypically male gender expectations. Erroneous conclusions about my sexuality were drawn and homophobic bullying ensued for not “fitting in” with other young men.
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
As a tennager I said some incredibly hurtful things to my mother as she was going through separation and divorce from my father. I blamed her for what I perceived as the destruction of our family and attributed the depression and anxiety I was suffering wholly to my grievances with her.
How would you define masculinity?
A set of societal expectations foisted on men that centres power, stoicism and violence.
Does misandry exist?
Sexism against men exists but it is generally because of a perceived LACK of masculinity, not an abundance.
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
I would attribute the prejudice against me to misogyny and homophobia, given it was a perceived LACK of masculinity that drove the prejudice.
