About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Part true storytelling, part TED talk and part apology, the show looks at how the patriarchy hurts men too; how the patriarchy has hurt him, and how he has hurt people because of patriarchy. Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
A social structure that places men at the top, at the expense of women and trans people.
How has patriarchy hurt you?
largely it hasn’t, but it has put pressure on me as a man to be physically strong and be the “bread-winner”. However, society is rigged to give me the best chances of achieving both.
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
everything I do is influenced by patriarchy, and so by extension everything I have ever done to hurt people is influenced by this, in unfairly giving me a sense of superiority over others and passing that off as being down to my hard work as opposed to born privilege.
How would you define masculinity?
The state of being a man. Everything that attempts to add detail to this is a sweeping generalisation that doesn’t take into account the various types of man, and thus tells some men that their existence as a man is wrong and doesn’t fit within what they should be. I don’t agree with that.
Does misandry exist?
Misandry was coined when men realised that some women resent men for their privilege. Crying misandry fails to acknowledge that hating and fearing men is the result of patriarchy and the inherent sexism within our society.
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
Never in a way that has disadvantaged me.
What best describes you?
An ally to feminism
