Does patriarchy exist?

How would you define patriarchy?

A social order with rigid gender expectations.

How has patriarchy hurt you?

By confining the behaviours of myself and everyone around me to the gender norms it prescribes patriarchy has reduced our freedom of expression and limited the ways we feel are acceptable to interact with others. Such limitations have negative mental and emotional repercussions; for example my own repression of ‘feminine’ emotions has on many occasions left me unable to cope with or resolve situations that I should otherwise have been able to.

How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?

Yes. I have not been aware of or respected some of the challenges young women face whilst growing up because I was never expected to understand or learn about them. This has resulted in relationship issues and a lack of female interaction. I have also had my expectations unfeasibly set by pornography about women’s bodies and to this day still struggle not to objectify women in public which can be demeaning and invasive (referring specifically to looking at women).

How would you define masculinity?

As a framework of rules, behaviours and norms that describe how men should behave in a patriarchal society.

Does misandry exist?

It exists but is not as damaging as misogyny.

Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?

What best describes you?

A feminist
