About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
The heavily entrenched system of default assumptions that assign priority status to men
How has patriarchy hurt you?
By designating certain activities and modes of expression as non-masculine and therefore second class, patriarchy has both limited my options by discouraging my participation as a man and, when I do choose to participate despite my gender, to lessen the value of those non-masculine activities.
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
My socially taught assumptions of how others should behave either as men, as women, or towards men has led me to act towards them in ways that denies a full engagement with who they are as an individual reacting to me as an individual in favor of viewing their actions categorically.
How would you define masculinity?
A set of assumptions about how a male-defined individual should interact with their environment. I struggle hugely with this question because I don’t necessarily think masculinity is inherently negative or monolithic, but believe that in western society its effects are almost totally supportive of a pervasive, pernicious patriarchy.
Does misandry exist?
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
Only in a way that has advantaged me
What best describes you?
