About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
Men get it all easier. White men easier still. White middle class men easiest.
How has patriarchy hurt you?
it hasnt. I’m a white middle class man. I have an easy ride. Although it’s scares my psyche. I think and act on sexist thoughts and emotional undercurrents far too often.
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
i can be condescending to women. It comes “naturally” at times (although I believe it’s learnt behaviour) I remember one time presuming a female musician hadn’t written her own songs (I work in music, I was speaking with a semi famous song writer and disparaged another famous, female, song writer) it just came out.like “how could a women write such good songs? A man must have written them for her”. I was horrified with myself after I realised what I’d said.
How would you define masculinity?
things men do
Does misandry exist?
Maybe. It’s like reverse racism or english Christians saying they are persecuted. Too often just deflection.
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
I work with a wonderful head teacher. The things men I power say to her in meetings, flippant comments, patronising and sexist. Are disgusting
What best describes you?
An ally to feminism
