Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
institutionalised privilege granted to men over people of other genders.
How has patriarchy hurt you?
As a gender-normative man, it hasn’t directly, but it is a major element of social inequality, which ultimately harms everyone.
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
Intitutionalised biases can affect people’s behaviours in ways they don’t expect or even realise. It was recently pointed out to me that I have a tendency to talk over my girlfriend; I suspect this unpleasant habit may be symptomatic of a subconscious tendency to exert social dominance in conversations with women in general.
How would you define masculinity?
Masculinity is a broad cultural schema defining behaviours deemed appropriate or desirable for men.
Does misandry exist?
Depends what you mean by the question. I’m sure there are people who are prejudiced against men in general, which would, by definition, be misandry. However, misandry is not a widespread phenomenon or, generally speaking, much of a cause for concern.
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
As I said above, men are often unaware of patriarchal prejudice. Exposure to feminism helps!
