Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
A social system in which men are the primary beneficiaries of power primarily by virtue of their gender.
How has patriarchy hurt you?
As a man I have been railroaded through violence or conditioning into a very narrow shape. I have been sexually abused as a child and my position as a male has been a contributor to the anguish I have felt over this. I experience dysphoria over my gender and am unable to explore this publicly because of fear of social or physical violence in response. I grew up being taught that women were there to support and serve me as long as I could provide for them and that was thinking that was hard to emerge from.
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
Hard to answer. I guess in the sense that I have received privilege over others by virtue of my masculinity I have disadvantaged others but my social class and skin tone play into this also.
How would you define masculinity?
Well it’s a bit tricky because linguistically it’s circular. Masculinity is the collection of traits normally associated with men and boys and so essentially whatever things we think of as masculine collectively define masculinity.
Does misandry exist?
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
If prejudice is people holding preconceived notions about me based on my gender then yes.
What best describes you?
None of the above
Uncomfortable with definitions 😛
