About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
The deeply embedded societal privilaging of supposedly masculine traits and men over supposedly feminine traits and women.
How has patriarchy hurt you?
Patriarchy and the subsequent views about how men ‘should’ behave was probably a reasonably big part of my father being unable to talk about or accept having a queer son.
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
Was taught kissing women without explicit consent was romantic, not sexual assault, as patriarchy views women’s opinions as unimportant compared to the desires of men. Did this twice.
How would you define masculinity?
Ideally there would be no one definition – it would be something that each man would define for himself. In practice masculinity is a bundle of traits which mostly exist to define men in polar opposition to women e.g. strength vs weakness, rationality vs emotions
Does misandry exist?
On a societal level, no. On an individual level, perhaps.
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
As a trans man I found people listened to me more respectfully when they gendered me as male rather than female.
What best describes you?
Equalism and egalitarianism seem to be nicer words for men’s rights activists, who tend to be misogynistic.
