The “success object” role that men are pushed into has never been a good fit on me, and that’s caused a lot of pain over the years.

Yes

I’ve gotten lots of advantages from being a cis man, including at least one significant job offer that I know for a fact I only got because of my gender. At the same time, I’ve been downstream of some nasty stereotypes about men, and been considered an easy target for certain kinds of attacks, also because of my gender. Turns out life is complicated.

Yes

How would you define patriarchy?

A culture of disrespect and violence towards women. I would distinguish it from individual sexist or misogynist perspectives in that it’s about people holding power and putting others at a disadvantage rather than hate or anger. So, the way I understand it, someone might be non-misogynist but still benefit from the advantages of privilege and inequality; or have negative views about women but less access to structural advantage.

there are mainstream models of masculinity revolving around power, imperviousness, and lack of emotional reflection that I would reject; I don’t think of myself in terms of my masculinity, but if I did, the sort of things I would consider would be courage, creativity, compassion, resilience and generosity. I’m not sure how those are male traits, but there are few traits I would view as inspirational in men and not in women.

Yes

I’m sure there are some women who, either due to negative experiences with men or otherwise, feel anger or hatred towards men. I think this is a different phenomenon from patriarchy for all sorts of reasons, not least of all scale.
