About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Part true storytelling, part TED talk and part apology, the show looks at how the patriarchy hurts men too; how the patriarchy has hurt him, and how he has hurt people because of patriarchy. Drawing on an anonymous survey of 1000 men, feminist theory, internet memes and his life experience, Dave will explain the conclusions he Read More ...
Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
Enforcement of punitive hierarchies of power by an established oppressive “elite”.
How has patriarchy hurt you?
Enforcement of gender boundaries, being told that a behaviour is “girly” as if that were an insult. Being in a culture that hates women do much that being gay (and therefore not, somehow, male enough??) I shouldn’t exist. Years of depression and suicide attempts could have been avoided if maybe we were more OK as a society with women.
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
I daresay I have. I went to an all his grammar school, so had opportunities debuted to others. As a task white man, my vice is listened to add authoritative when I deserve no such position. This must harm others and myself every time I accept and act upon that privilege.
How would you define masculinity?
An unhelpful code of behaviour that seems at best archaic, but at worst, dangerous, destructive and utterly pointless.
Does misandry exist?
very rarely, if ever. mostly I see that used whenever someone thinks a woman or women should have even close to a fair deal. I daresay there’s some very rare senses where it might apply (support for male victims of rape, maybe?) but in general it seems to just be a term used to dismiss the voices of women.
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
Only in a way that has advantaged me
What best describes you?
An ally to feminism
I’d hope to be described as feminist, but I can’t be the one to do that as it’s another way to take agency from women.
