A social system where men hold the significant majority of social, political, economical power and this is seen normal.

How has patriarchy hurt you?

The patriarchy assumes ideas about gender roles that are very binary and then idealises those who conform to these ideas. This has created social expectations of me that do not resonate with me – e.g. competitiveness, hetronormativity, dominance.

During job recruitment processes, I rate women who have been away from work for long periods of time lower (due to their lack of experience) but this is a result of the patriarchy expecting women take time off to raise children.

The attributes associated with ‘manliness’. Masculinity includes ideas such as ‘men as the primary earner’, ‘men need to compete/be dominating’, ‘men are assertive and good leaders’.
