About the show: Dave Pickering takes us on a personal journey through gender as he tries to explain masculinity both to you and to himself. Part true storytelling, part TED talk and part apology, the show looks at how the patriarchy hurts men too; how the patriarchy has hurt him, and how he has hurt people because of patriarchy. Does patriarchy exist?
How would you define patriarchy?
Men running things. But no-one wants to talk about the success they’ve had in the process; the successful wars, the economic booms(the ‘busts’ will be down to some woman meddling, hence the name! Am I right guys??). The maintaining of the patriarchy itself is a major success story! Nah, just men running things in various ways, from ruining the world to being a bit of a dick at home.
How has patriarchy hurt you?
Irrevocably. Privilege and advantage are a considerable cross to bear, as any Tory cabinet minister will tell you. Nah, it’s obviously not.
How have you hurt people in a way influenced by patriachy?
I’ve no idea. I’m sure I have done though at some point.
How would you define masculinity?
Having the male chromosome and not much beyond that.
Does misandry exist?
I’m sure it must do. But then that’d be like white people complaining about racism. It’s complicated but in the bigger picture, it’s not really a thing to worry about.
Have you experienced gender and/or sex related prejudice?
Asked to do occasional heavy lifting maybe? Even then, not that heavy.
What best describes you?
Been told I’m a feminist, but I probably don’t think about it enough to warrant that. Although strangely no-one calls me a nice guy but I’m fine putting that up. Powerful word I suppose.
